How It Works – 3 Steps to Joining the Academy

NOKfinders Academy is designed for people looking to gain hands on experience in forensic genealogy. 

To become an Academy Member:
1. View or attend the Overview Session (required before applying)
2. Review the Academy Information Packet (updated 9/9/2023)
3. Apply 

Members pay a monthly fee ($30/month) and gain access to live cases, mentoring and a supportive community where you will gain experience in forensic genealogy.

3: Submit Application

Applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. If accepted, members will be invited to the next monthly Onboarding meeting. Please allow 2 weeks for application review.

NOKfinders Academy

Hands-on casework for aspiring professional forensic genealogists.

Academy Eligibility

Candidates for NOKfinders Academy will have training in genealogical research and must be able to demonstrate the ability to follow genealogical standards.  In addition, it is expected members will have the ability to perform research, evaluate sources, transcribe records, analyze information, resolve conflicts, construct citations, and communicate in writing.  

This experience can be gained through programs such as these:
Boston University Certificate in Genealogical Research
University of New Haven Graduate Certificate in Forensic Genetic Genealogy
Strathclyde University
Week-long institutes (ex. SLIG, GRIP, IGHR)
Degree in Family History
ProGen Study Group

Candidates will also commit to following a strict code of ethics and adhere to the highest level of professionalism.

NOKfinders Academy Program

Academy members will be assigned live Unclaimed & Missing Person cases and work at their own pace.

The Academy is designed to offer flexibility for members. You can work on a just a few cases or commit to solving many. You can be a member for a few months or many years. It’s up to you! 

Each case research report will be reviewed and feedback will be provided to help develop your research skills.  

In addition, Academy members will have access to an online community to ask questions and get support from peers.
